ONE can hardly open a newspaper these days without being regaled
with the merits of Hoxton, London's mecca for contemporary art. Back
in the 1930s, however, Hampstead was the place to be, thanks to the
presence there of the British abstract artists Ben Nicholson, Barbara
Hep-worth and Henry Moore, not to mention the influx of brilliant
refugees fleeing from the Nazi threat.
Thanks to their combined forces, London temporarily overtook Paris
as the world centre for the avantgarde for the first time.
