Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi Dies at 62; Huge Bet to Revive Japan's Economy Will Decide Legacy

Keizo Obuchi, 62, who as Japan's prime minister for 20 months
struggled to revive his nation's economy, died today in a hospital
here after six weeks in a coma.
Obuchi, a career politician, was a steady and colorless leader
whose end was perhaps more remarkable than his tenure. His successor,
Yoshiro Mori, was picked by party insiders a day before the public
was told that Obuchi was gravely ill. And since Obuchi's official
replacement on April 5, there had been a near-complete blackout on
news about his condition.
