The situation in Austria may be desperate, but it is not serious. And certainly not as serious as the hysterical overreaction in Europe would suggest.

Listening to west European politicians and diplomats outbidding one another in their promises to boycott a "far-right" Austrian government, you could be forgiven for seeing in Jrg Haider and his Freedom Party the cutting edge of a Nazi wedge about to slice its way through Europe's fragile democracies. It is an alarming scenario; fortunately, it is mostly fiction.

Haider is not a pleasant individual. He comes from a solid Nazi family; he has, ...
