Thorfinn Karlsefni, his wife, Gudrid, and 160 Viking colonists
steered their three ships past a small island covered with birds,
then sailed up a broad fjord to a likely campsite. "There were
mountains and a pleasant landscape," the Sagas say. "The grass grew
tall."
The colonists called the settlement Straumfjord--"Current Fjord"--
and used it for three years before abandoning it, driven away by
fierce native skraeling warriors who fought with bows and arrows from
fleets of skin-covered war canoes.
What--and where--was Straumfjord?
To date, the only confirmed Viking settlement on the continent ...
