A rickety wooden ferry overloaded with as many as 500 people fleeing religious violence in the strife-torn Moluccas Islands sank during a storm Thursday, raising fears that hundreds of the passengers may have drowned in the heavy seas.

Rescue officials said they had located the accident site but had not yet found any survivors. Search efforts were hindered by bad weather.
