The director of such films as Sebastiane, Edward II and The Tempest was also a painter, stage designer, gardener and diarist.

He believed "a boy's arse is the hole to heaven" and spent most of his life trying to get in there. He died of Aids in 1994.

Tony Peake considers Jarman's death so significant that he begins his biography with his funeral.
