WITH the approach of Armistice Day comes a crop of concerts and
readings commemorating the poets and composers extinguished in the
World Wars.
The first of those two rounds of slaughter seems to have consumed
more talent than any other conflict, before or since. The poets
killed included Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, Isaac Rosen-berg and
Wilfred Owen. And among the composers were two expected to become
major figures: Rudi Stephan among the Germans, and George But-
terworth, born in Paddington in 1885 and cut down by a sniper's
bullet at the Somme in 1916.
