PARLIAMENTARIAN, womaniser, patriot, animal-lover, diarist,
entertainer, litigant, historian and charmer. In death, as in life,
the adjectives flow thick and fast to describe
Alan Kenneth Mackenzie Clark.
But for all the public controversy and bluster, he wanted
increasingly in later years to be taken seriously as a historian and
scholar.
Although it is for his famous Diaries that he will be best
remembered, Clark was also the author of several well-received books
on military history.
He was 33 when he wrote The Donkeys, a study of the incompetence
of Britain's First World War generals.
