FRANCIS Wheen's first biography was called Tom Driberg: His Life and Indiscretions, and this book, in which Wheen tries to understand Karl Marx as a human being, might have had a similar subtitle. Here, we learn that Marx, as well as being the father of socialism, was a serious drinker and inveterate sponger, a man who preached global revolution but insisted on living like a gentleman, who went on pub- crawls in the West End and impregnated his nanny.
