SIR John Eliot Gardiner is worried that, through being overplayed,
Beethoven is losing his power to shock. Nevertheless, he set out
last night to "postulate a new way of approaching Beethoven's
symphonies" by showing how much the French Revolution was an
influence. As if that had not been done before.

The Orchestre Rvolutionnaire et Romantique and the Monteverdi
Choir began with a bracing snatch of the Ode to Joy, but thereafter
were silent for long stretches while Sir John ranged widely on
European history 1792-1824.
