Reprieve for five Lambeth libraries after Standard fight library watch

THE five Lambeth libraries due to shut this year have been saved after public pressure led by a campaign in the Evening Standard forced the council into a dramatic volte-face.

Durning Library in Kennington, described by council officials as "miserable, dilapidated, outdated and generally the worst in Britain", will be kept open indefinitely and have its services enhanced. The other four libraries in the borough that were threatened with closure have won a temporary reprieve until the next financial year in a move that has won cautious welcome from the Friends of Lambeth Libraries.
