Gilmore's New Catch Phrase: 'The Northern Part of Virginia'

The governor of all Virginia has a new name for the suburbs of Northern Virginia.

Midway through his four-year term, Gov. James S. Gilmore III (R) has decided to start referring to the Washington suburbs as "the northern part of Virginia." Despite its seemingly separatist tone, Gilmore said the mouthful actually sounds more inclusive.

Either way, "it's all the same," Gilmore conceded today during his monthly call-in show on WTOP radio. But he said his new term does a better job of showing that his "whole philosophy of the state is to draw people together and not to become isolated or ...
