THIRTY-EIGHT scientists, lawyers and philosophers, backers of the
so-called "Great Ape Project", are currently petitioning New
Zealand's parliament to pass a Bill which confers rights on
chimpanzees and other primates. If successful, their campaign will
inaugurate a worldwide attempt to grant legal protection to our
nearest relatives among the animals, and ensure that henceforth
"animal rights" will have the same status as human rights in the
determination of our legal duties.
The impetus behind the campaign comes from the Australian
philosopher Peter Singer, whose 1975 book Animal Liberation ...
