SIR William Macpherson started life with enormous advantages. He was a Scotsman - equivalent (it has been said) to being born with a silver spoon in the mouth. He was destined to be chief of his clan, and laird of much of what he surveyed around Blair-gowrie in Perthshire. As if to offset his good fortune, he would urge locals touching their forelocks in his presence to "call me Bill". To others taking note of his distinctly non-Caledonian vowels and consonants, he would insist: "I am a full-blooded Scotsman."
