The thing about journalists, especially those of the TV variety, is that they tend not to be team players. Unlike soldiers, who are steeped in the doctrine that they succeed or fail together (it's called the "buddy buddy system"), hacks believe in succeeding at each other's expense. Anyone who doubts this is invited to read Going to the Wars by Max Hastings, the "liberator of Port Stanley". It is a wonderfully self-revealing memoir, about a man with rather more rivals than friends, and if anyone else had written it about him he should have sued for libel.
