Japan's ruling coalition lost strength but retained its majority
in general elections Sunday, signaling popular discontent with a
decade of stagnation but no change in policies in the world's second-
largest economy.
The moribund economy and the oratorical pratfalls of Prime
Minister Yoshiro Mori sharply undercut the power of the Liberal
Democratic Party by 38 seats in the 480-seat lower house. The party
has ruled with only brief interruption since shortly after World War
II.
But with two smaller coalition party members, the Liberal
