Alexandre Dumas (or Dumas pere as he is known, to distinguish him
from his illegitimate son) was born in Villers-Cotterets, Picardy, in
1802. In his lifetime, he was best known as a playwright, but today,
of course, he is known as the author of `The Three Musketeers', `The
Man in the Iron Mask' and `The Count of Monte Cristo', from which
this opening extract is taken. Set in the Napoleonic era, `The Count
of Monte Cristo' was written in 1844-45 and tells the story of how
the young Edmond Dantes is falsely accused and incarcerated in the
