Boost for art world as Reynolds portrait of young Tahitian sells for record pounds 10m

SIR JOSHUA Reynolds's Omai, an iconic portrait of a young man who
grew up in Tahiti and was feted by 18th-century London society, was
sold at Sotheby's yesterday for a record price of more than pounds
10m.
The work, which symbolises an age that saw unprecedented advances
in the fields of travel, commerce, sciences and philosophy, depicts
the young man in flowing robes.
The auction was the first such art sale since the terrorist
attacks of 11 September, and the painting is the most expensive sold
