Farewell 2001: Buddhas of Bamian Damned and blasted
|
For a millennium and a half they stood in a valley deep in the
Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. They survived the Muslim
conquest of the 7th and 8th centuries, and even Genghis Khan 500
years later. But the giant buddhas of Bamian could not survive the
Taliban.
The rest of the world had already become aware of the Taliban's
primitive and narrow version of Islam from its treatment of women.
Its hatred of anything resembling culture was obvious from the
smashed televisions and cassette tapes strung from lamp-posts in
