Obituary: Juan Bosch
|
ALTHOUGH A president for only a few months, Juan Bosch was a
crucial figure in the political and cultural life of the Dominican
Republic and the Caribbean for more than 50 years. From the late
1930s to the 1990s, he offered a principled and dignified opposition
not only to the corruption and skulduggery that characterised the
dictatorships of Trujillo and Joaquin Balaguer, but also to the often
disastrous influence of the United States in the region.
Bosch's devotion to the politics of his native country was the
more remarkable because he was the child of first-generation
