For a man who makes his living by inventing deeply unsympathetic characters, comedian Ricky Gervais is very enjoyable company. In fact he's so far from his TV persona that you wonder if he has a hidden dark side. "No," he laughs. "It really does come from observation, which is why I hope other people find it funny because it's true to life. I mean we all know the kind of character who craves attention although he talks nonsense, or the kind who thinks, `If-I-speak-very- slowly-then- what-I'm-saying-must-be-interesting.'"
