Election 2001: Fringe Parties - Socialists and Greens celebrate symbolic success

THE SMALLER parties, including the Greens and the Socialist
Alliance, were claiming electoral success yesterday - despite failing
to win any seats.
The Green Party held 10 deposits, by gaining 5 per cent or more of
the vote, and doubled its share of votes cast. The newly founded
Socialist Alliance claimed that its result marked a resurgence for
Socialism, with the best result for the left since 1950.
