LAURENCE STERNE was a late bloomer. He was 48 when the first two
volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy came out in 1759.
The book was an instant smash and Sterne loved every minute of the
fame that it brought him. "I wrote not to be fed, but to be famous,"
he declared. He was chummy with Garrick, had his portrait painted by
Reynolds, and was received at court. He sent letters to his wife, who
languished in the provinces while Sterne "Shandied it" in the
capital, gloating over his dizzying whirl of high-society
engagements.
