Was there ever a time when putting on a new opera was free of anxiety? Certainly not in the last 100 years. These days, the pressures on a composer writing for the opera house are immense. Much is made of the necessary "right to fail", but too many composers have exercised that right. For most new operas, the period between the ecstasy of the first night and the agony of oblivion is depressingly short.
