Ninette de Valois, dame of the dance, dies at 102

DAME NINETTE de Valois, the founder of the Royal Ballet, and the
woman who started, moulded and oversaw Britain's ballet tradition,
died yesterday aged 102. Such was her influence and reputation in the
world of ballet that news of her death, even as a centenarian, was
received with shock. British ballet, after all, has never known a
time without her.
Sir Anthony Dowell, the director of the Royal Ballet, said: "With
the death of Dame Ninette de Valois, we acknowledge the passing of
one of the 20th century's greatest and most influential figures in
