Caspar David Friedrich: he puts the important thing bang in the
middle of the scene. It's revolutionary. It's just what, for the
previous three centuries, European landscape painting had avoided
doing. That avoidance was a way of saying that nature wasn't man-
made. Nature might have an order, but it shouldn't be given a centred
and symmetrical arrangement, as if it were constructed like a
building. Composition was important, but even very composing
landscape painters, such as Claude and Poussin, were careful to
