THE MASSACRE took little more than an hour. In a murderous frenzy of ethnic hatred, 118 men, women and children were hacked to death with machetes and spears as they stepped from the trucks they believed were taking them to safety. Six were beheaded.

The Madurese settlers were slaughtered by Dyak tribesmen when they returned to their homes in the small town of Parrangean under police protection, in the worst single atrocity of the ethnic slaughter that has shaken Indonesia's province of Borneo in the past 10 days.
