Despite the inconveniences--the bandits on the rutted roads that
led into the city, the plumbing once you got there, the outbreaks of
plague--Mozart made the journey, and did so with delight. So did the
poet Goethe, urbane artists and many dukes and earls. For the
worldliest and wealthiest sophisticates of Europe, 18th-century Rome
was the place to be.
What lured them to the city was a certain kind of beauty--
expensive, academic, chic and layered in its learnedness--which most
knowing viewers nowadays offhandedly dismiss.
