While he was still in his early twenties, Edward Steichen (1879- 1973) was already being described as "perhaps the greatest photographer who ever lived". On the other hand, Ansel Adams - pretty far up in most people's photographic pantheon himself - snarled that Steichen was unquestionably the "anti-Christ of photography".
