Victorian architecture, according to the latest utterance of the architectural commentator Jonathan Meades, is too often the strange, stylistically psychedelic fruit of syphilitic lotos-eaters whose buildings were larded with the welts and carbuncles of this period and that, and produced nothing more valuable than dense, perfectly achieved pastiches. The architects of Victoria's century were thus grave robbers, raiders of the not quite lost arts.
