MAYBE it's an age thing. I just didn't get Are You Experienced?'
at all, William Sutcliffe's supposedly hilarious account of the
school-leaver's gap year backpacking around India jaunt. However,
Emily Barr's tale of the twentysomething woman packing it all in to
go travelling doesn't provoke nearly as much book-burning angst.
That's not to say it's a work of literary genius. It's fluff of
the pinkest kind; a girly novel for flu-ridden winters. But it
aspires to be something more.
