Wynton Marsalis will tonight step on stage at Birmingham's Symphony Hall and, in dress as immaculate and buffed as his trumpet, he will lead his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in its tribute to Louis Armstrong. How pleased old Satchmo would be, say Marsalis's supporters, that 100 years after he was born in the poorest quarter of New Orleans his music should be celebrated in venues that normally echo to Beethoven and Mahler. Jazz has come of age and achieved the respectability it was so long denied.
