Sailing prodigy in the doldrums, but glory beckons

SHE MAY have been deep in the doldrums but the British sailing
prodigy Ellen MacArthur had reason to be elated - and exhausted -
yesterday when she grabbed the lead in the world's toughest solo
race.
The 24-year-old from Derbyshire, who has joined sailing's male-
dominated elite after just four years of competition, opened up a
five-mile lead over her closest rival in the Vendee Globe challenge,
only to fall behind again shortly afterwards.
After 82 days at sea - braving icebergs, storms, broken masts and
oil leaks - she now sits 3,000 miles and 14 days from the finishing
