There is, at first glance, something archaic about the Jodrell Bank telescope which rises almost 300ft above the flat Cheshire plain, outside Macclesfield. Its sheer size - 3,500 tons of steel and rivets to support a great steel bowl, almost as wide as the whole structure is tall, and which gathers incoming radio waves from all over the universe - makes it look like a piece of outmoded Soviet hardware.
