U.S. citizens do not need passports to enter the U.S. Virgin
Islands (although you will need a government-issued photo ID, such as
a driver's license, to fly home). If you plan to visit the British
Virgin Islands, however, you must have a passport or photo ID and
birth certificate.
American citizens who shop in the U.S. Virgin Islands get triple
the allowance for duty-free imports, compared with other foreign
destinations, where you are permitted a $400 allowance before you
have to pay tax. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can bring back
$1,200 worth of stuff without paying a penalty.
