In the first century BC, Britain was split into various, warring,
territories, each controlled by different Celtic tribes. These tribes
were more sophisticated than they're given credit for but, when Aulus
Plautius led 50,000 Roman soldiers onto British shores in AD43,
society and landscape were to be dramatically transformed. Out went
wooden roundhouses and in came flamboyant villas, aqueducts,
amphitheatres, arrow-straight roads - and, much later on,
Christianity.
