Sir: It is regrettable that Professor Richard Dawkins did not make
himself familiar with the scientific literature on homeopathy before
delivering his brief lecture on proper scientific procedure (letter,
25 August). In The British Homoeopathic Journal vol 44, 1954, pp 7-
44, he will find a paper by W E Boyd which gives a detailed account
of a tightly controlled experiment involving the action of microdoses
of mercuric chloride on the hydrolysis of starch with malt diastase.
A normal dose of mercuric chloride will promptly jam the enzymatic
