PRESIDENT Clinton arrived in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, yesterday for a two-day visit designed, in part, to encourage the struggling new democracy and bestow America's blessing on it.

When Mr Clinton last visited Africa, two years ago, he snubbed the then international pariah, which was a byword for corruption under the military rule of Sani Abacha.
