Ibsen's Ghosts
|
"The sun, the sun!" With these words ends perhaps the single most
famous literary production of the Nordic countries, Ibsen's Ghosts,
the young painter terminally ill from syphilis reiterating his
request as yet another winter day breaks on a sombre landscape in
western Norway. His words could serve as a motto for the Nordic
society which produced him, particularly in its late 19th-century
manifestation (the period of its great artistic flowering and
international influence).
