In 1434, Gil Eanes, a young squire in the service of Prince Henry of Portugal, rowed ashore south of a Moroccan Cape known then as Bojador. He did not find things very different from the north of the cape, but this was significant. If the Sahara desert resembled a moonscape, Eanes's short step was as dramatic as the moonwalk. For Bojador marked the end of the known world. It could be said that during this short journey, almost 60 years before Columbus's voyage, the medieval view of the world ended and the modern project of European conquest and colonisation was under way.
