Obituary: Jean-Pierre Rampal

JEAN-PIERRE RAMPAL, the greatest French flautist of our times and
an outstanding musician, carried the traditions of the elegant French
style of playing into the present century and throughout the world.
He was the latest in a grand tradition of French flute players
stretching back in an almost unbroken line to the time of Louis XIV.
Although he particularly championed the music of the Baroque, he
performed and recorded an enormous repertoire ranging from the 16th
century to the present day, embracing jazz, folk song, Japanese
classics and Indian music.
