Obituary: Pham Van Dong

SOMEWHAT IRONICALLY, the former Vietnamese prime minister Pham Van
Dong died on 29 April, the eve of the 25th anniversary of the
Communist victory in Saigon for which he had struggled so long. News
of his death was delayed in order not to mar the ceremonies, just as
happened in 1969 when Ho Chi Minh died on the 34th anniversary of his
declaration of Vietnam's independence. The similarities in the fate
of these two men do not end there.
Like Ho, Dong was born in central Vietnam, or Annam as it was then
called, around the turn of the 20th century. Both of them were the
