Watching last week's ceremonies to mark the 500th anniversary of the first Portuguese settlement of Brazil - and the associated protests from various indigenous and enslaved peoples - I wondered whether a more developed travel and tourism industry would have had a beneficial effect on the events of all those years ago.

Imagine, for example, if today's media had existed in 1500 when Pedro Alvares Cabral first set foot in Brazil (forget the derision he would have received for the fact that his discovery was an accident - he had been on his way to India).
