WE KNOW sadly little of Sappho: only that she was born into an
aristocratic family on the island of Lesbos, in the later part of the
seventh century BC. It is probable that she was exiled to Sicily at
some time, that she was married and had a daughter called Cleis, and
that she presided over some kind of circle or school to which girls
were sent to learn the arts, especially poetry and music.
We also know that Sappho had an extraordinarily high reputation.
Plato referred to her as "the tenth Muse", and she was an important
