Carl Albert, 91, the Oklahoma Democrat who as speaker of the House
of Representatives provided what was regarded as cautious, centrist
leadership during some of the most turbulent times in American
history--the years of Vietnam and Watergate--died Friday night at a
hospital in McAlester, Okla.
Albert's health had long been precarious. He underwent triple-
bypass surgery 15 years ago, after heart attacks in 1966 and 1981,
and he had been treated for cancer in the 1980s.
