Padua steals a march on Venice in race for `lost' Vivaldi manuscript

ON A steamy afternoon, in a Renaissance palace overlooking Rome's Piazza Navona, the small northern city of Padua stole a triumphant musical march on its famous neighbour, Venice.

In an imposing chamber, its walls lined with old masters, its wooden ceiling covered with noble coats of arms, a suave-suited auctioneer last week talked his audience of art dealers through an impressive array of books, manuscripts and antique photos.
