In the darkest days of the Second World War, Jean Moulin was the
man chosen by Charles de Gaulle to be the political head of the
Resistance movement. In June 1943 he was arrested in a suburb of
Lyon, tortured by the local Gestapo under the orders of Klaus Barbie,
and presumably murdered. In December 1964, in Paris, his ashes were
deposited in the Pantheon; in a moving ceremony Andre Malraux paid
tribute to "the leader of a people of the night". He was consecrated
as a national hero - a key element in de Gaulle's process of national
reconciliation - and became a revered cornerstone in the myth ...
