AT LAST. After all the misguided and often disastrous attempts by one company after another to improve on The Sleeping Beauty, the Kirov Ballet has taken the inspired, if revolutionary, course of going back to the work's origins. Opening its London season last night, it proved a revelation: the real crown jewels of dance.

It matters because The Sleeping Beauty was the one occasion when Russia's greatest choreographer, Marius Petipa, and its greatest ballet composer, Tchaikovsky, collaborated on a work together. The ballet they made in 1890 brought out the best in both of them. It was not ...
