RODOLFO MONTIEL may only have gone to school for a year,but no one could fool this Mexican campesino. He knew there must be a link between the rivers drying up and the loggers who kept chopping down the forests of fir and white pine near Pizotla village in south- western Mexico.

With barely a trickle left to water the corn and bean plots, the topsoil turned to dust in just three years and many local families were suffering.
