RODOLFO MONTIEL may only have gone to school for a year,but no one
could fool this Mexican campesino. He knew there must be a link
between the rivers drying up and the loggers who kept chopping down
the forests of fir and white pine near Pizotla village in south-
western Mexico.
With barely a trickle left to water the corn and bean plots, the
topsoil turned to dust in just three years and many local families
were suffering.
So in 1998 Mr Montiel banded the neighbours together and began to
