RUDOLF KIRCHSCHLAGER was one of the fathers of the Austrian State Treaty, signed on 15 May 1955, which restored Austria to full sovereignty and led to the end of the four-power occupation started 10 years before with the fall of the Third Reich.

In return for the settlement, the Austrians pledged themselves to permanent neutrality. This was important during the Cold War years. Kirchschlager had joined the Austrian Foreign Office in 1954 after working as a judge.
